What makes us different from big-name retailers?
You’ll find firewood for sale in plenty of places — garden centres, petrol stations, DIY stores and national retailers. But if you’ve tried burning their logs before and ended up with steam, soot or disappointment, you’re not alone.
Here’s how The Logsmith stacks up against big-name chains — and why more people are switching to us.
Moisture content matters — and ours is lower
Most retailers sell kiln dried firewood with moisture levels between 15–20%, sometimes creeping even higher depending on how long the wood has been on a pallet or in store. That still qualifies for the UK’s “Ready to Burn” standard — but it doesn’t give you the best burn.
At The Logsmith, our logs are ultra kiln dried to under 15% moisture, which means you get more heat energy per kilo, better combustion, and cleaner fires with less wood used.
Based on figures from HETAS and the Forestry Commission:
-
Logs with 15–18% moisture deliver 4,400–4,700 kWh/tonne
-
Logs with under 15% moisture deliver up to 5,000 kWh/tonne
That’s up to 10% more energy — and fewer logs burned for the same warmth.
We only sell hardwood — not softwood mixes
Many mass retailers offer softwood logs or hardwood-softwood blends. These might be cheaper, but they burn faster, produce more smoke and create more creosote in your flue. They’re not great for long fires, and they can cause more wear and tear on your stove.
We only supply 100% hardwood logs — oak, ash and birch — for better performance and longer-lasting heat.
Zero plastic packaging — and it's all recyclable
Retail firewood is usually sold in plastic nets — hard to store, bad for the planet, and not recyclable through most curbside schemes.
We package all our logs in FSC-certified recyclable cardboard boxes, sealed with paper tape, which you can recycle, compost, or even burn when empty. No plastic, no shrink wrap, no strapping.
Stackable, manageable, delivery-friendly
Our boxes measure 21.4 cm (H) x 39.1 cm (W) x 26.0 cm (D) — compact enough to store in a cupboard, utility room or garage. They’re stackable and easy to lift, with no mess or awkward shapes to deal with.
Retail logs often come loose or bagged — bulky, inconsistent, and difficult to store indoors. If you’re ordering more than a few bags, the space-saving benefit of boxes is hard to beat.
Consistent sizes, consistent results
We carefully cut and grade all our logs for length and thickness, so you get a reliable burn every time. Big retailers often sell logs that vary wildly in size — which can be frustrating if your woodburner has limited capacity or you're cooking over an open flame.
Fast, reliable delivery — not just click & collect
With The Logsmith, free delivery over £75 comes as standard. We also offer next day delivery to most UK postcodes, so you can restock quickly and easily — no need to drive to a store or wait for restocking.
Retailers often offer click & collect only, with limited home delivery options and no guarantees on moisture or quality.
Sustainability is built into everything we do
Our wood is sourced from well-managed, sustainable forests and every product we sell is certified Ready to Burn. From the forests we select to the packaging we use, we make it easy for you to burn wood more responsibly — without compromise.
And we're here to help — not just sell
We don’t just offer logs — we provide information, support and service. Our blog is full of tips on choosing the right wood, storing it properly, and getting the most out of your appliance. If you have a question, we’re just an email away — no call centres, no vague answers.
